Acutely ill asthmatic adults were recruited over an 18-month period from the EDs of 7 participating academically affiliated hos pitals. On presentation to the ED, patients were included in the study if they were 18 to 45 years of age inclusive, had a diagnosis of asthma according to American Thoracic Society Criteria, 11 had a pretreatment FEVi of 50% or less of predicted, and were able to perform spirometry following written informed consent. Patients "in extremis" requiring immediate therapy or therapy other than oxygen, methylprednisolone, and p2-agonists were excluded from the study as were patients with significant complicating or con comitant medical illnesses eg, pneumonia, acute myocardial in farction ; . In addition, patients were not included if they were known or suspected to be pregnant or nursing, had received any investi gational drug within 3 months prior to the study, and or had been previously enrolled into the study. Patients were randomized to receive fenoterol or albuterol by MDI administered as 4 individual puffs given by means of a 145-ml valved aerosol holding chamber with facemask Aerochamber With Mask; Trudell Medical; London, Ontario ; sequentially at intervals of about 30 s.

Quetiapine Reports of alopecia The Intensive Medicines Monitoring Programme IMMP ; has received two reports of alopecia associated with quetiapine. The first case reported to the IMMP involved a 34-year-old woman with psychotic depression. Approximately six weeks after starting therapy with citalopram and quetiapine initially 25 mg day and titrated to 100 mg day ; , she noticed significant, continuing hair loss. Quetiapine was withdrawn one week later and her alopecia resolved; citalopram was continued throughout. The second patient was a 34-year-old woman with bipolar disorder who was receiving quetiapine 300 mg day, zopiclone and clonazepam; she was also using a salbutamol Abluterol ; inhaler as required. She developed increasing hair loss 20 days after starting quetiapine; her medical history recorded alopecia while receiving valproic acid. Quetiapine was stopped and her hair loss resolved. Auditory brainstem response ABR ; audiometry to pure tones was used to evaluate cochlear function and followed our standard protocol Mitchell et al., 1999 ; . Prior to treatment, mice were anesthetized and their individual ears were stimulated with a closed-tube sound delivery system sealed into the ear canal. The ABR to tone-burst stimuli at 4, 8, 16, and 32 kHz were recorded and analyzed independently and thresholds at each frequency were determined for each ear. Following their respective treatments, ABR thresholds were again determined and the threshold shift at each of the four frequencies was determined for each ear. Considerable variability in ABR thresholds occurs in autoimmune mice, which makes statistical comparisons difficult due to large within group variances. Because the critical determination in this study is whether an individual ear responded to treatment, its pre- and post-treatment thresholds were compared. The total shift across the four frequencies was calculated by arithmetically summing the four frequency threshold shifts Trune et al., 1999a, b; Trune and Kempton, 2001 ; . An ear was judged as improved if this post-treatment threshold summation was lower by 20 dB more, which would represent an average improvement of at least 5 dB per frequency. Conversely, an ear was classified as worse if this combined threshold shift was higher by 20 dB more average threshold of 5 dB more per frequency higher than baseline ; . Any combined threshold shift of 19 dB less + or ; was considered unchanged. The number of ears in each outcome category was statistically compared to water controls with the v2 nonparametric test.

Therefore there is always need of drugs which stop progression of disease and have minimum side effects and also are cost effective. In this review article we have basically focused our discussion on some of the emerging targets for PD which act on traced pathological pathways and cellular mechanisms causing neurodegeneration.

In ambulatory children with acute cough 110 days ; with no history of asthma and a normal chest examination, oral albuterol was not effective in reducing cough frequency or duration [48]. In a meta-analysis, Smucy et al likewise concluded that "there is no evidence to support using beta2-agonists in children with acute cough and no evidence of airflow obstruction" [228]. There is only one study on use of inhaled salbutamol in chronic cough median of 8-weeks ; which also showed no benefit [47]. There is no evidence for the use of anti-cholinergics for in children with non-specific cough [229].
